How to work out which service you actually need

Here’s the advice we’d give our own family, and it’s the part nobody tells you on the phone.

Ask about cubic metres, not tonnage. Every quote you get should be in cubic metres, because that’s what actually fills a truck. Tonnage tells you nothing. Two guys and a 20m³ truck at $165 an hour will almost always beat a cheaper crew in a 15m³ truck, because the cheaper truck has to go back for a second load — and you’re paying for that return trip in travel time.

The cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest move. A per-hour rate looks lower on paper than a fixed price right up until the day runs long. We’d rather overestimate and hand you money back than surprise you at 4pm.

Box everything. Everything. The single biggest cost blowout we see is loose items — the odd lamp, the pot plant, the half-full laundry basket. Loose things can’t stack, so they eat truck space and crew time and they’re the things that get damaged. If it fits in a box, put it in a box.

For city moves and units, a small truck often wins. Same cost, easier parking, fewer trips up the driveway. Bigger isn’t automatically better.
