Commercial removalists Kiama businesses actually use
We are not a Kiama-only outfit, and we will not pretend to be. We are based at 3/135 Keira Street in Wollongong and we cover the whole Illawarra, which for commercial work is an advantage rather than a drawback: it means the same crew that moved a 40-desk office in Wollongong last month can be on your Terralong Street shopfront the following week. Shop fit-outs are a different animal: display units, glass cabinets, point-of-sale counters, shelving bays, stock on hangers and in cartons, signage, fridges for food retail. We move shops off Terralong Street, out of Kiama Village and around Gerringong and Shellharbour, usually on a Sunday or after close so you lose the least trading time. Glass and mirrors get blanket-wrapped and stood on edge, never laid flat.

Pallet racking, stock, tools, workshop equipment. For a large volume move we will quote by the load and bring the right truck for it rather than doing six trips with a small one.
How a commercial move with us actually runs
- Walk-through or phone quote. For anything bigger than a small office we come and look. We count the furniture, look at the access at both ends and give you a written estimate in hours and cubic metres. We would rather tell you the number is a bit high now than surprise you on the day.
- A plan for the day. Which floor goes first, what is labelled, what stays, where the truck parks at each end, and who has the keys and the lift access. We put it in writing so the site manager and our crew are working from the same sheet.
- Packing, if you want it. Our packing service can box up the whole office the day before, or you can have staff pack their own desks into crates we drop off. Either works. What does not work is loose items — more on that below.
- Move day. The crew arrives, protects the floors and lifts, disassembles, loads in an order that lets us unload the new site in the order you need it, and drives. On a big job we run two trucks so the unload starts before the load finishes.
- Set-up and sign-off. Desks assembled, furniture placed to your floor plan, rubbish removed, and a walk-through with you before we leave.
After-hours and weekend commercial moves
Most of our commercial jobs in Kiama and Shellharbour happen on a Saturday, a Sunday or after 6pm on a weeknight, because that is when a business can afford to be closed. We do them all the time. The one thing to know is that after-hours moves are booked during office hours: ring us Monday to Saturday between 8:00am and 5:00pm to lock in the date, or send the form at the bottom of this page and we will call you back on the next business day. If something has gone wrong — a lease ending sooner than expected, a landlord wanting you out, a fit-out finishing early — we can often do a same-day or next-day commercial move. Ring and ask. If we can fit it in, we will.
What commercial removalists in Kiama cost — the honest version
We charge hourly, door to door, and we publish the rate: from $165 per hour plus GST for two removalists and a 20 cubic metre truck. Larger crews and a second truck are quoted per job. That is not the cheapest number you will hear in the Illawarra, and after years on the trucks we are comfortable saying so, because the cheapest hourly rate is very rarely the cheapest move.
Here is why. A company five dollars an hour cheaper saves you about twenty-five dollars on a five-hour job. If their crew is slower, less careful, or working intentionally slowly to run up the clock — and at the very bottom of the market some are — that twenty-five dollars turns into an extra two hours on the bill and a cracked glass cabinet. A good crew does the same office in three hours that a cheap one does in five. So it is true they charged you less per hour, but the cost was more at the end of the day.
Two questions to ask every removalist you get a quote from, because the answers change the price more than the hourly rate does:
- How big is the truck in cubic metres? Not tonnes — tonnage tells you nothing about how much furniture fits. A $150-an-hour truck that is only 15 m³ and has to do two trips costs a lot more than a $165-an-hour truck that is 20 m³ and does it in one. Our crews also load properly — think Tetris — so we routinely fit what another company would split across two loads.
- How many removalists come with it? Some companies send one. Ask.
If you would rather have a fixed price than an hourly one, we will give you one, but be aware that a fixed quote is always a bit higher than the hourly rate would have come to, because we have to allow for things going wrong. Certainty costs a little; that is the trade-off, and we would rather you knew it up front.

Every job is different and this is a guide, not a quote. It comes from what we typically see on the trucks.

Before you take any quote, put the whole move — removalists, packing materials, make-good on the old premises, the lost trading day — into a budget. The federal government’s business.gov.au planning guide is a sensible place to start, and if you are relocating registered premises you will also need to update your details with the ATO and set up Australia Post business mail redirection before moving day, not after.
The advice we’d give our own family about a business move
The single biggest thing that blows out a commercial move is loose items. Not big furniture — we are good at big furniture. It is the drawer full of cables, the twenty framed certificates leaning on a wall, the box of stationery nobody sealed, the twelve monitors with no bubble wrap. Every one of those has to be picked up, carried and placed individually, and every one of them is a thing that can get damaged. Box it. Tape it. Label it. A properly packed office moves in half the time of a loosely packed one, and half the time is half the bill.
Second: label to the destination, not the origin. “Reception — left of door” is useful. “Sarah’s desk” is not, if Sarah is on leave. Draw the new floor plan, number the desks, and stick the number on every piece that goes to that desk. Our crew can then unload without asking anyone anything, which is the whole point.
Third: book the lift and the loading dock at both ends. In Kiama that is rarely a problem; in a Shellharbour or Wollongong office tower it is the difference between a five-hour job and an eight-hour one, and it is not something we can fix on the day.
And if it is a hot day, the crew will not say no to cold water. We remember the customers who do that.
