Get the truck size right, and ask about cubic metres — not tonnage
Here is the advice we would give our own family, and it is the thing that saves the most money on this route.
When you ring around for quotes, do not ask how big the truck is in tonnes. Tonnage tells you what the truck is allowed to carry on the road. It tells you nothing about how much of your house fits inside it. Ask for cubic metres. That is the only number that matters. We have had customers go with a cheaper mob at a lower hourly rate, and the truck turns up at 15 cubic metres when the house needed 20. Now it is two trips up and down the M1 instead of one, and the “cheaper” quote has cost them two hours of driving they are paying for. Cheapest on paper is very often the most expensive on the day.
The other thing we will say honestly: bigger is not automatically better either. For city runs, tight unit blocks and short moves, a smaller truck is genuinely the smarter choice — same cost per hour, and it can actually park where it needs to instead of the crew walking your lounge suite 60 metres up the street. We would rather send the right truck than the biggest one. The Sydney end: lifts, docks and parking permits
The Sydney end is where the clock gets eaten. Three things to lock in before moving day:
- Book the lift, and book it long. Most Sydney apartment buildings require a service lift booking with building management, and many will only give you a two- or three-hour window. If your load is a genuine four hours, book two windows or a full morning. A lift booking that expires halfway through a load is the single most expensive thing that can happen on this route.
- Reserve the loading dock or check the height. Plenty of Sydney basement car parks are 2.1 or 2.3 metres. Our trucks are not. If the only access is a low basement we need to know before we leave Wollongong, because the fix is a smaller truck or a longer carry, and both change the plan.
- Sort street parking early. If there is no dock, you need a legal spot for a truck. Most Sydney councils issue temporary works or removalist parking permits, but they want several business days’ notice. Pack everything — this is the mistake that costs the most
After years on the trucks, the number one thing that blows out a Sydney to Wollongong move is loose items. Not heavy furniture. Not stairs. Loose items.
