Cull properly, and do the maths per item
If a flat-pack bookshelf costs ninety dollars new and eats half a cubic metre of interstate truck, you are usually better off selling it here and buying one there. We will say that even though it means less work for us. Solid timber, anything with real value and anything you actually love — bring it.
Dismantle everything that comes apart
Bed frames, table legs, shelving, desks. A pulled-apart bed frame takes about a third of the space of an assembled one. Tape the fittings in a labelled bag to the piece they belong to.
Box everything, in consistent sizes
Loose items are the enemy of a backload. Odd shapes and open tubs leave air gaps, and on an interstate job you are paying for that air. Same-size boxes stack square and fill space properly. Fill the voids too — drawers, the washing machine drum, the inside of the wardrobe.
