Why store with your removalist?

The big advantage of storing with the same team that moves you is no double-handling. Your furniture is wrapped once, loaded once, and stays on our system from pickup to delivery — which means less risk of damage and less cost. It’s the smart option when you’re moving interstate or your timing is up in the air.

How our storage service works

  1. Get an honest quote. Tell us roughly what you need stored and for how long.
  2. We pack & collect. We wrap and load your goods (add packing services if you like).
  3. We store it securely and keep an inventory.
  4. We deliver when you’re ready — straight to your new place.

When Storage Is the Right Call (and When It Is Not)

Most people who ring us about storage are in one of four situations, and the honest answer is different for each.

Settlement dates that do not line up. This is the most common one by a mile. You settle on the sale before you settle on the purchase and there is a gap of anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Storage is absolutely the right answer here, and it is far cheaper than paying a truck to sit and wait or booking two separate moves at short notice.

Renovating. You need the house empty for the trades but you are moving back in. Store it, and be honest with yourself about the timeline — renovations run over far more often than they run early, so budget for longer than the builder says.

Downsizing. You have moved somewhere smaller and there is furniture you are not ready to part with. Storage works, but this is the one case where we would gently suggest doing the maths. If you are paying to store a lounge suite for two years, you may be spending more than it would cost to replace it.

Going overseas or interstate for a while. Long-term storage makes sense, and it is worth packing it properly at the start because nobody is going in to check on it.

Getting Furniture Into Storage Without Wrecking It

Furniture almost never gets damaged by sitting in storage. It gets damaged by how it went in. Four rules from our side of the truck:

Everything goes in dry

This is the big one, especially over an Illawarra winter. Anything that goes into a storage unit slightly damp — a lounge that sat on a wet driveway, a mattress that caught the rain between the door and the truck — will develop mould, and by the time you notice it is usually too late for fabric. If it is wet on the day, it gets dried before it gets stored.

Cover things so they can breathe

Do not shrink-wrap upholstery and leave it sealed for months. Plastic traps moisture against the fabric and the piece sweats inside its own wrapping. Breathable covers and moving blankets are what you want for anything soft.

Whitegoods go in clean, dry and with the doors ajar

A fridge or a washing machine sealed shut for six months comes out smelling like something died in it. Empty it, clean it, dry it, and leave the door propped open.

Dismantle what you can

Bed frames, table legs, shelving. It takes up a third of the space, which means a smaller unit and a smaller bill. Tape the bolts and fittings in a labelled bag to the underside of the piece they belong to — not in a box you will never find again.

How to Load a Unit So You Can Actually Get to Things

If there is any chance you will need something before the whole lot comes out, plan for it on the way in. Leave a walkway down the middle rather than filling wall to wall. Put anything you might need — tools, kids’ winter clothes, paperwork, the spare kettle — at the front, and label those boxes clearly on the side.

Heavy and sturdy on the bottom, light and fragile on top. Never stack anything on a mattress or a lounge; the weight will leave permanent compression marks over a few months. Keep boxes off the bare floor on a pallet or a couple of timber battens if you can, and leave a gap between your goods and the walls so air can move.

What Should Not Go Into Storage

  • Anything perishable, opened, or that was once food — this is what attracts pests
  • Petrol, gas bottles, paint, solvents and pool chemicals
  • Aerosols and anything under pressure
  • Cash, jewellery, passports and irreplaceable documents
  • Anything you will genuinely need within the fortnight — keep it with you instead

Drain the fuel from the mower and the whipper snipper before they go in.

Why Storing With Your Removalist Is Simpler

The alternative is hiring a self-storage unit and moving your own goods in and out of it, which means handling everything twice and often paying for two separate truck bookings. When we store for you, your goods come off our truck and go straight into storage, then come back out onto our truck when you are ready. Same crew, same load, one booking.

It also means we already know what you have. When you ring and say you are ready, we know the volume, we know what needs two people, and we know which pieces need dismantling again. That is the difference between a smooth delivery day and a long one.

Storage pairs naturally with a house move, and it is genuinely useful on interstate relocations where delivery windows are a few days wide — knowing you have somewhere for your goods to land takes the panic out of the timing. If you want the whole lot boxed properly before it goes in, our packing service handles that on the same day.

How Long Should You Budget For?

Whatever you think, add a fortnight. Settlements get delayed, builders run over, and the one thing more expensive than a few extra weeks of storage is having to move your goods out at forty-eight hours’ notice because you booked to the day. If you are storing while sorting out finance or a purchase, the MoneySmart guidance on managing moving house costs is worth a read while you budget the rest.
