Here is the honest truth after years on the trucks, and it is the single most useful thing we can tell you about packing: the number one thing that runs a move over time is loose items.
Every lamp, every pot plant, every half-full laundry basket, every armful of coat hangers that has not been boxed is something the crew has to carry, wrap and find a home for on its own. Loose gear is slow to handle, it wastes truck space you are paying for by the hour, and it is far more likely to get damaged than anything sitting inside a carton.
Same-size boxes stack square and fill a truck efficiently. Odd shapes and open tubs leave air gaps, and air is the most expensive thing you can put on a removal truck. So the rule we give our own family is simple: box everything, use consistent box sizes, and fill the voids — drawers, the washing machine drum, the space under the table.

Books, tools and the garage
Small boxes only. A large box of books is a back injury waiting to happen and it will burst its base halfway down the stairs. The garage and the shed are also where nearly every underestimate comes from, so pack them first rather than last.
Artwork, mirrors and TVs

There are things that cannot legally or safely go on a removal truck, and it is better to know now than on the morning:
- Petrol, gas bottles, paint, solvents and pool chemicals
- Aerosols and anything under pressure
- Fireworks, ammunition and firearms
- Perishable food and open liquids
- Cash, jewellery, passports and irreplaceable documents — these should travel with you
