Short answer: most local moves in Wollongong cost between $120 and $180 per hour for two movers and a truck. Premier Removalist charges $165/hr + GST. A unit usually takes 3–5 hours and a house 5–8 hours, so most local moves land somewhere between about $500 and $1,400 + GST. Volume, access and distance move the number up or down, and we explain each one below.
We’re a working removalist team based on Keira Street in Wollongong. After years on the trucks, we’ve learned that people aren’t really asking “how much do removalists cost”. What they want to know is what their own move will cost and how to stop it blowing out. This guide covers both, with the numbers we’d give our own family.

A tidy two-bedroom unit on the ground floor in Fairy Meadow sits at the bottom of its band. The same two bedrooms on the third floor of a Crown Street walk-up, with a spare room of loose items, sits at the top. The bedroom count only gets you in the right ballpark.

How Much Do Removalists Cost Per Hour in Wollongong?
Most Wollongong removalists quote local jobs by the hour. A two-person crew with a truck generally runs $120–$180 per hour, and a three-person crew $180–$280. Our rate is $165/hr + GST.
The hourly rate on its own tells you very little. Before you compare two quotes, ask each company:
- When does the clock start, at our depot or at your door?
- Is there a minimum booking? Two hours is common.
- Are blankets, trolleys, shrink wrap and tools included?
- Is GST included in the rate?
- How big is the truck, and how many movers are actually coming?
A cheap rate with a two-hour travel charge and extras on top will often cost more than a slightly higher rate that includes everything. MoneySmart’s budgeting guide is worth a look if you’re planning the whole move on a tight budget.
The Honest Truth About Removalist Prices, From Our Side of the Truck
We’ve given thousands of quotes, and a few things decide the final bill far more than the rate you’re quoted.
Be completely packed before we arrive. This one saves more money than anything else. When every box is taped, every drawer is empty and the small stuff is already boxed, we just load. When we turn up to half-packed rooms, you’re paying our hourly rate while we wait or wrap loose items. If you only take one tip from this page, make it this one.
Compare quotes on cubic metres, not truck tonnage. You’ll see ads for a “4-tonne” or “8-tonne” truck. That’s the truck’s weight rating, and it tells you nothing about how much of your furniture fits. Furniture fills space long before it gets heavy. A three-bedroom house is usually 20–25 cubic metres, so ask every removalist how many cubic metres their truck holds. If one says tonnes and the other says cubic metres, you aren’t comparing like with like.
A bigger truck isn’t always cheaper. For unit and CBD moves around Wollongong, with tight laneways, underground car parks and loading docks, a smaller truck that can park at the door often finishes faster than a big one parked down the street. Every extra metre we carry is time on your bill.
Be honest about access. Tell us about stairs, lifts, long driveways and the piano in the back room. A quote based on the full picture is a quote that holds on the day.
What Affects the Cost of a Removalist
- Volume: how much you own matters more than how many bedrooms you have.
- Access: stairs, lifts, steep driveways and parking distance all add time.
- Distance: a move from Thirroul to Kiama takes longer than one across Corrimal.
- Timing: Fridays, Saturdays, month-end and the December–January peak book out first.
- Special items: pianos, pool tables, safes and large glass pieces need extra people and equipment.
- Packing: doing it yourself saves money, and having us do it saves time.
Removalist Costs for Different Types of Move
Local house moves are charged hourly. See our house removalists page for how a typical day runs.
Furniture-only or small jobs often come in at the minimum booking. That usually means $300–$500 for one or two big items, depending on stairs and distance.
Pianos are quoted separately because of the equipment and extra hands involved. Our piano removalists page has the detail.
Packing adds time and materials. Our packing services can cover the whole house or just the kitchen and fragile items.
Storage between settlements is charged separately from the move. See furniture storage in Wollongong.
Hidden Fees to Ask About
- Fuel levies added on top of the hourly rate
- Depot-to-door travel time at both ends
- Minimum booking charges
- Boxes, tape and wrapping materials
- Weekend or public holiday surcharges
- Specialty item fees for pianos, pool tables and safes
We tell you all of this at the quote, in writing. If a company won’t put its extras in writing, that tells you something.
How to Get the Best Price on Your Move
- Book two to four weeks ahead, and further ahead for December, January and month-end.
- Declutter first. Anything you sell or donate is volume you don’t pay to move.
- Choose a mid-week date if you can.
- Be fully packed, with boxes labelled by room, before the truck arrives.
- Get two or three quotes and compare them on cubic metres and inclusions, not just the hourly rate.
Local vs Interstate Removalist Costs
Local moves are charged by the hour. Longer moves are usually quoted as a job price that covers fuel, tolls and driver hours. For moves up the M1, see Wollongong to Sydney removalists. For anything further, see our interstate removalists service.
